Yes! I got a Saman!
I received a call yesterday when I was driving back after work.
“Shawn, I have something to tell you”.
Usually from my experience, that means either extremely good news or someone is extremely upset with me.
This new-in-faith and growing young man went on to tell me that he was stopped by a policeman for almost running a red light in KL. And it was obvious that the policeman wanted something from their short conversation by the road.
(Disclaimer – I’m by no means discrediting the police force and I believe only a small portion of the force falls into this category. I’m thankful for their job in upholding peace and justice in our country).
As my friend is reaching his pocket, which he was so accustomed to, he suddenly remembered that he has read somewhere in the bible that if you knew what is right and didn’t do it – it is also not pleasing unto God. And just 2 days ago, he heard me sharing my personal stories whereby I stood for what is right … and was willing to accept whatever fine which I deserved for breaking traffic laws … which both times, I was let off the hook by grace. He decided to make a decision to do what is right … to say no and to willingly accept the RM 300 piece of paper. He told him 'I’m a Christian and I can’t do this'.
He was so happy and relieved as he was relating his encounter with me. So happy that I thought he too, was let off the hook without the fine. But he said gleefully, “Yes, I got the Saman! I got it!” The tone of voice and the content of the statement didn’t jive with me for a sec (try saying it knowing that your wallet will be RM 300 poorer). But then I realised, it’s the joy of doing what was right before God that was really what he was referring to.
Now, I’m sure many of us would be happy and jump for joy if we get off the hook or we get what we want when we stand for righteousness. We will have no issues thanking God for the blessings. But how many of us can say the same if the outcome was against us? How many of us can say ‘Even if … I will still stick to my decision’. Even if. Kinda remind of these guys ... I'm encouraged and proud of this guy!
